The island

Responsibilities

As a gameplay programmer, my main responsibilities while working on The Island were developing new gameplay features for customers to enjoy while they were on the resort or travelling between different games. All elements were developed as part of multiplayer experience so all customers could enjoy them at the same time.

- Role: Junior Unreal Engine Developer

- Engine: Unreal Engine 4

- Language C++/Blueprints

For almost a year I was working on The Know-A-Lith which is a standalone UI system for The Island. This UI was shared and updated between multiple clients with the same client ID making it quite a tough challenge to synch all the UI elements across all different groups as UI in UE4 is client sided.

Outside of working on the UI, I have also been responsible for developing a VR Bow range which was made from scratch. And multiple smaller features such as ray guns, wave shooter or pickable items that rewarded players with virtual currencies. Moreover, I was also taking part in integration of Ready Player Me which now has been released and is being used across all Otherworld sites.

Know-A-Liths

As part of my tasks, I was chosen to create the new User Interface to be used on The Island. Know-A-Liths is a server based user interface that allows users with the same group ID to browse through different experiences and attractions available on the island. In addition, they also allow users to teleport to different places inside the island and to other friends.

The UI is fully replicated to other clients and each of the clients is allowed to interact with it at the same time providing an update to all within range and the same user id, otherwise the system looks like it has never been used, which allows other sessions to use the same interface without other group realising.

VR Bow and Arrow range

The Bow and Arrow range has been implemented by me from scratch. All elements of it such as the bow animation and interaction were done in blueprints.

The range also keeps the track of player scores allowing for a bit of a competition feel. Not only that, once the timer has finished player scores are then transferred into our digital database where they are converted into Dreamcoin allowing customers to buy drinks and snacks as rewards for their score on the Island.
